Ballard's Drowned World Intrusion

Was rooting around in a fernbrake hunting peking plague flies and noticed an unusually large number of unusually corpulent snails. Reminded me of Ballard's novella "The Drowned World" I'd read years ago. 

I think in the story it was solar flares.

Early terrestrial ecology fascinates me. 

Prototaxites, a giant fungus up to 30' tall, grew in huge fungus forests all throughout the Devonian.
